Manchester United Destroy LA Galaxy 7 – 0

If this is a taste of the Van Gaal era, United will be shooting back to the top of the league this year. They controlled most of the game, and despite substituting most of their lineup, looked the best we have seen them since the 2012/13 season.

But one name stood out of this game: Ander Herrera. The £28.8m Athletic Bilbao midfielder was one of two players to play the full game for United, and was involved with many of the goals:

Linking well with Mata in midfield, Herrera played with real conviction and fluency, as did most of van Gaal’s players, his arrival clearly providing the jolt many of those involved last season needed to rouse them from the slumber of the previous managerial regime.

Herrera set up United’s final two goals and his influential display suggested the enfocred loss of Michael Carrick for three months following ankle surgery may not be as keenly felt if he can hit the ground running as he did here in the Rose Bowl Stadium, which played host to the 1994 World Cup final.
